Counting characters for limits that matter

Many places set a hard character limit, so a count that includes or excludes spaces can decide whether your text is accepted. Paste your text to see characters with spaces, characters without spaces, words and lines.

Common limits

• X (Twitter) posts: 280 characters
• SMS: 160 characters for a single message in basic encoding
• Page title in search results: about 50 to 60 characters before it may be cut off
• Meta description: about 150 to 160 characters
• Instagram bio: 150 characters

Things that change the count

Line breaks, emoji and some symbols may count as more than one character on certain platforms. Always leave a small safety margin when you are close to a limit.
