How to calculate a discount

This tool tells you the sale price and the amount you save when a shop offers a percentage off. It also helps you compare offers, such as "30% off" against a flat "₹500 off".

The formula

Savings = Original price × Discount% ÷ 100, and Sale price = Original price − Savings.

Worked example

A jacket is marked ₹2,000 with a 25% discount. Savings = 2,000 × 25 ÷ 100 = ₹500, so you pay ₹1,500. If the shop adds a further 10% on the sale price, you pay 1,500 × 0.90 = ₹1,350. That is a total saving of 32.5%, not 35%, because the second discount applies to the already reduced price.

Smart-shopping tips

  • Compare the final price, not the percentage. A bigger discount on an inflated "original" price can cost more than a smaller discount on an honest one.
  • Check whether tax is added after the discount.
  • Look at shipping and return costs, which can cancel out a small saving.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, a ₹1,500 sale price after a 25% discount means 1,500 ÷ 0.75 = ₹2,000 originally.
