Number to Words

Convert numbers to Indian Rupees in words for cheques.

Converting numbers into words

Cheques, invoices, legal documents and school forms often require an amount written in words as well as digits. Enter a number and the tool writes it out, which helps prevent mistakes and tampering.

Indian and international grouping

The Indian system groups digits as thousand, lakh and crore, so 12,34,567 reads as twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven. The international system groups in threes, so 1,234,567 reads as one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven. The same number of digits can have different commas, so check which system your document expects.

Tips for writing amounts on cheques

  • Write the amount in words starting at the left edge and draw a line through any blank space.
  • End with the word only after the amount.
  • If the words and the digits differ, banks generally go by the words.
