Internet Speed Test

Reading your internet speed result

A speed test reports download speed, upload speed and latency. Download speed matters for streaming and browsing, upload speed for video calls and sending files, and latency, measured in milliseconds, for gaming and calls.

Mbps and MB/s

Speeds are quoted in megabits per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, so a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most about 12.5 megabytes per second.

Rough requirements

• HD video streaming: about 5 Mbps per stream
• 4K streaming: about 25 Mbps per stream
• Video calls: a few Mbps each way

Getting a fair result

• Close other downloads and streams while testing.
• Use a cable connection or stay close to the router.
• Run the test several times, because results vary through the day.
