Understanding exchange rates

An exchange rate tells you how much of one currency you get for another. The converter multiplies your amount by the rate: converted amount = amount ร— rate. For example, if 1 USD equals 83 INR, then 250 USD is 250 ร— 83 = 20,750 INR.

Why your bank gives a different number

The rate you see on comparison tools is usually the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices. Banks, card networks and money-transfer services add a margin and often a fixed fee, so the amount you actually receive is lower. Always compare the final amount received, not only the advertised rate.

Tips for sending or spending money abroad

  • Pay in the local currency when a card terminal offers a choice. Paying in your home currency usually uses a worse rate.
  • Compare at least two providers for large transfers.
  • Check fees for foreign card use and ATM withdrawals.
  • Rates move through the day, so treat a result as an estimate until you confirm it.

Frequently asked questions

Are the rates live?

The tool tries to fetch recent rates and falls back to approximate reference rates if the data cannot be loaded. For any real transaction, confirm the rate with your bank or provider.
